Circa 1665, this oil on canvas by a follower of Sir Peter Lely is a portrait of Anne Sparrowe (circa 1610-1684). She married William Sparrowe (1600-1647) who was member of a prominent merchant family who owned The Ancient House in Ipswich which is renowned for its pargeting. The Sparrowes were Catholics and staunch royalists and by family tradition sheltered Charles II in The Ancient House after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Provenance: by direct family descent from the sitter. 25 inches x 33 inches across the later frame.
