A fine late 16th century maiolica albarello depicting St Paul who is shown holding a sword, the symbol of his martyrdom, and as author of the Epistles, a book. It is attributed to the workshop of Domenego da Venezia which produced large cylindrical and globular vases decorated with scrolled panels surrounded by stylized flowers and foliage in a dark blue ground. See catalogue entry 37 in "Italian Maiolica" a Fitzwilliam Museum handbook, for an example with similar decoration. 11 1/2 inches high.
