This very unusual parquetry picture depicts a lion behind bars. This almost certainly is meant to represent a lion in the Tower of London. A menagerie existed in the Tower from the 13th century and lions were kept in the barbican which was known as the Lion Tower. The last lion was removed after it bit a keeper in 1835. A variety of woods is used which appear to be native to Britain. It is hard to date but is probably early 18th century. 19 inches x 14 1/2 inches across the later frame.
