Of stool size and possibly used as a stool as well as a little chest, this mid 16th century coffret measures just 19 1/2 inches x 11 1/2 inches across the top x 14 inches high. The end boards are held by large dovetails, a construction device often used by Flemish immigrant Flemish cabinetmakers, and have arched cut outs. Surprisingly the iron hinges have survived as have the hasp and lockplate. A bit rough but a rare survivor!
