Secular carvings from the 16th century are very rare and this oak head of a woman is a particularly arresting example. Almost certainly depicting an individual, she has long hair held on top of her head and an enigmatic expression on her face. On the back she has a label, probably 18th/19th century "Revd. Franklin". Excellent untouched colour and patination. 10 inches wide x 8 inches high.
