As the foremost of the three "theological virtues", the figure of Charity was often portrayed as a woman suckling two infants as is in the shown in this fine French, probably Breton, carved panel. By the sixteenth century she also frequently held a flaming heart as can be seen held aloft here in her right hand. The deeply carved oak panel measures 17 inches x 12 inches.
